U.S.-Flag Carriage Up For Second Month In A Row

Shipments of dry-bulk cargos in U.S.-Flag lakers increased for the second month in a row in August. Loadings in U.S. bottoms totaled 13.4 million net tons, an increase of 4.6 percent compared to the corresponding period last year. These two months of increases have enabled U.S.-Flag carriage to inch above the total recorded through of August of last year.

Iron ore loadings continued to reflect the high production rates at U.S. steel mills. U.S.-Flag lakers hauled 6.8 million tons of taconite pellets in August, an increase of 14 percent compared to a year ago. For the season, the U.S.-Flag ore float stands at 35.1 million tons, an increase of 5.3 percent.
