Superior Coal Holds In Own Despite Low Water Levels

Coal loadings at Superior Midwest Energy Terminal in Superior, Wis., totaled 1,888,257 net tons, a tiny increase compared the corresponding period last year. However, a comparison of individual ship loads illustrates the continuing problem of low water levels. This May, SMET's largest loading in a vessel in the Head-of-the-Lakes trade totaled 62,217 n.t., whereas a year ago, the top cargo was 64,035 n.t.

For the season, shipments from SMET stand at 4,042,175 net tons, a slight increase compared to the same point in the 1999 navigation season.
