Iron Ore Shipments From U.S. Lakes Ports
 Up 44 Percent In January

Shipments of iron ore from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 2 million gross tons in January, an increase of 44 percent compared to the corresponding period last year, and an increase of 19.5 percent compared to the 5-year average.

With the St. Lawrence Seaway being closed for the winter, there were no Lakes-bound shipments from the iron ore mines in eastern Canada, but those facilities did load 270,000 gross tons of iron ore for delivery to East Coast ports.  That total represents an increase of 62 percent compared to last year, and an increase of 13.2 percent compared to the 5-year average.

All-rail deliveries of iron ore totaled 800,000 gross tons in January, a decrease of 20.7 percent compared to last year, and a decrease of 9.5 compared to the 5-year average.
