The Stone Trade

The National Stone Association estimates that on average, each American uses 11,000 pounds of stone each year. Little wonder then stone is such a prominent cargo moving to and from Ohio via the Lakes.

Marblehead is one of eight U.S. stone loading ports on the Lakes. A recent expansion of the dock's loading system has enabled larger vessels to service Marblehead and shipments generally top 3 million tons a year.

Stone delivered to Cleveland, Lorain and Ohio's other Lake Erie ports typically tops 9 million tons.

Ohio steelmakers use "fluxstone" as a purifying agent in the steelmaking process. The construction industry uses "aggregate" as the base for roads, highways, parking lots....

Ohio's steel and construction industries rely on self-unloading U.S.-Flag lakers to deliver their annual fluxstone and limestone requirements.
