Shipments of iron ore, coal and stone from U.S. and Canadian Great Lakes ports topped 17 million tons in June, an increase of 2.3 percent compared to the same period last year. For the season, loadings of the "Big 3" cargos stand at 55.2 million tons, an increase of 12.2 percent.
The Lakes iron ore trade totaled 7.9 million tons in June, an increase of 7.3 percent. Through June, the ore float tops 26.3 million tons, an increase of 9.9 percent.
Stone shipments from U.S. and Canadian ports neared 4.6 million tons in June, just a few boatloads shy of last year. The 14.2 million tons of stone loaded through June represent an increase of 9.9 percent. If this pace continues, the Lakes stone trade will set a modern-day record for the fifth year in a row.
The Lakes coal trade was likewise down a cargo or two in June, but the 14.6 million tons loaded to date represent an increase of 15.5 percent compared to last year.
