Lakes Coal Trade Down Nearly 4 Percent In October
Coal shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 4,461,605 net tons in October, a decrease of 3.9 percent compared to a year ago. Compared to the month's 5-year average, the trade fared slightly better, declining only 1.9 percent.
For the year, the Lakes coal trade stands at 31.7 million net tons, a decrease of 7.2 percent compared to the same point in 2002 and a drop of 4.4 percent when calculated on a 5-year basis. The decline primarily reflects reduced demand for steam coal from the power generation industry.
