Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up 12-Plus Percent in May

CLEVELAND—Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 6.9 million tons in May, an increase of 12 percent over April and 12.1 percent ahead of a year ago. Shipments were15.5 percent ahead of the month’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 6 million tons, an increase of 10.4 percent compared to a year ago. Included in that total were 632,000 tons transshipped to Quebec City for final delivery overseas. Loadings at Canadian ports rose 26 percent.

Through May the iron ore trade stands at 18.8 tons, an increase of 11.7 percent compared to a year ago and 23.3 percent better than the 5-year average for the January-May timeframe.
