U.S.-Flag Great Lakes Float Up 7 Percent In May

U.S.-flag lakers carried 11.9 million net tons of dry-bulk cargo on the Great Lakes in May, an increase of 7 percent compared to a year ago and a modest gain over the month's 5-year average.  The increase would have been greater, but the storms that pummeled the Great Lakes basin toward the end of the month created strong currents in many waterways that resulted in significant vessel delays.

The 11 percent decrease in iron ore shipments (15 percent compared to the month's 5-year average) is misleading.  Demand for steel, and hence, iron ore, remains strong, as is witnessed by the fact that for the year, the U.S.-flag iron ore float stands at 15.3 million net tons, an increase of nearly 21 percent compared to the same point in 2003 and 6.5 percent compared to the 5-year average for the January-May timeframe.

Coal loadings in U.S. bottoms totaled 3.1 million net tons in May, an increase of more than 25 percent compared to both a year ago and the month's 5-year average.  Most of the coal moving on the Lakes is for power generation, so energy requirements are increasing as the economy revives.  On a year-to-date basis, coal shipments in U.S.-flag lakers total 6.4 million net tons, an increase of 58 percent compared to ice-impacted 2003 and 24 percent compared to the 5-year average.

U.S.-flag limestone cargos totaled 3.5 million net tons in May, another hefty increase (25 percent) over the corresponding period last year.  For the year, the U.S.-flag limestone float totals 6.9 million net tons, an increase 52 percent compared to again what was a weather-impacted 2003 and 21 percent compared to the 5-year average.
